Punta Cana travel tips

  • How to get around in Punta Cana

Looking to get off the aircraft and to your beach chair as quickly as possible? We recommend pre-arranging an airport shuttle service to your hotel with one of Punta Cana's leading shuttle providers, like Dominican Airport Transfer.

If you're staying in a vacation rental property or would just like more freedom, you can rent a car from the Punta Cana airport - after booking your flight on FlySwoop.com, you can access great car rental deals on the confirmation page or in Manage Bookings.

Once you've made it to your Punta Cana accommodation, there are a few options available for visitors who want to get out and explore. The most affordable option will be local buses, also known as guagua. While they check the 'cheap' box, the same cannot be said about efficiency - schedules are irregular and often running late. Stops aren't well marked, so if you'd like to get off, just yell "HERE".

Taxis are easy to arrange through your hotel reception desk and should always be pre-negotiated prior to entering the vehicle. Expect to pay around $30 USD for a 20-minute ride. If you're looking for something in between, and a bit of a thrill, Motoconchos (taxi motorcycles) are also an option. Prices start under $10 USD but helmets for guests are not a guarantee, so depending on your risk tolerance level, a taxicab may be a better bet.

  • How to save money in Punta Cana

There's nothing like escaping to a sandy beach in the middle of a cold winter. So if you're dreaming about Punta Cana but don't want to go over budget here are some tips to help you stay on track. 1. Book an all-inclusive

Most of the resorts in Punta Cana are all-inclusive, so you'll have an idea of the total trip cost prior to even booking. A Swoop Getaway booking at one of Punta Cana's all-inclusive resorts include your roundtrip airfare, stay, food, and drinks in the price. Most resorts have set times for breakfast, lunch and dinner, usually with a buffet option or a la carte. Alcohol is generally included in the price, save for a few top-shelf items. With all that wrapped-up in your price, all you have to factor in is the cost of tipping, gifts, and excursions.

    2. Research excursions

Whether you're a zip-line kind of gal or an ATV kind of guy, there's lots of fun 'extras' to do while vacationing in Punta Cana. Keep in mind these costs are extra and run around $15 - $200 USD depending on the activity. Some of the cheaper activities are snorkeling or speed boating, but if you crave a full-on adventure, try whale watching or sailing on a catamaran. Factor these outings in to your costs while settling on a budget. Feeling extra frugal? There's lots to do for free around the hotel, including soaking up the sun!

    3. Negotiate costs

Don't be shy about offering a price you think is fair to vendors. Whether it's a souvenir or public transportation - the locals are flexible when it comes to cost. If that's out of your comfort zone but you'd still like to buy some keepsakes or cigars, try a local supermarket. The prices there are likely to be lower than at tourist traps.

    4. Travel off-season

You're more likely to get a great deal from March to November, the off-season to Punta Cana. But don't worry - the weather is still most likely to be warm and wonderful. You may see some renovations happening at hotels during this time, but you'll also have the benefit of not having as many people around the pool.

  • Things to know before visiting Punta Cana

When planning a Punta Cana vacation, the first item to consider is lodging. Most hotels in the region are all-inclusive resorts, meaning that food and beverages are included in the cost of your stay. This is a great way to save money, but not ideal if you're into exploring the local food scene.

Don't worry about converting Canadian dollars into the local currency, Dominican pesos. The best cash to have on hand is USD for postcards in the airport, tipping at the hotel, and anywhere else you may be exploring.

If you get some rain, don't worry - it's not going to stay. Punta Cana weather is mostly very favourable with high temperatures and sunny skies. Showers occasionally roll in, but they often last a matter of minutes before blue skies and sun break through again.
