A Family-sized Vegas surprise #Only

In celebration of Family Day weekend, Swoop surprised one big family with an epic destination reunion, almost 10 years in the making. Because when airfare doesn’t break the bank, you can bring the whole family. Every. Last. One of them.

Any Canadian family separated by distance knows how hard it can be to get everyone together at once. Air travel in Canada has long been expensive and inaccessible for many, with the cost of a family vacation adding up quickly when you’re booking flights for 4 or 5 people. Distance shouldn’t get in the way of family fun, and the cost of air travel shouldn’t break the bank.

At Swoop, the thing we hear most often is how great it is to be able to visit family and friends more frequently, thanks to more affordable airfare. That’s really what gets us Swoopsters out of bed in the morning: Connecting people to the loved ones, destinations and memory-making possibilities that matter most.

In celebration of Family Day weekend – a time to connect and spend quality time – we wanted to make one family’s reunion dreams come true. Enter, the Kryk Family.

The Kryk’s are a tight-knit family, separated by distance. They’ve been trying to coordinate a family vacation for years, but budgets, schedules and timing have always gotten in the way. That’s where we swooped in…

Meet the Kryks

At the top of the Kryk family tree are Patricia and Lewis Kryk, who have been married for 57 years and have 4 adult children, 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. That’s a lot of people to get all together. In fact, the last time the family was all together was 8 years ago for Pat & Lew’s grand-daughter Krystal’s wedding. And even then, not everyone could make it.

Every year Patricia and Lewis take a vacation to the Southern United States and every year the invitation is open for the whole Kryk clan to come along, but until now it’s always just been a pipe dream. Travelling as a big family is tough when the costs of airfare starts adding up. We decided it was high time this family dream became a reality…

Stuff the family said:

Our amazing Las Vegas family reunion was a magical whirlwind of love, laughter and pure joy. With the assistance and generosity of Swoop, my family was so lucky to have received this dream trip of a lifetime.  We will always cherish the wonderful memories that were made along this incredible journey!
- Julie Kryk

The Ruse

So how did we fool Patricia and Lewis? Well, it turns out their daughter Julie is quite the master storyteller! The ruse all started with a throwback to when Julie found herself on stage singing and playing the guitar with U2 in Las Vegas, some 15 years ago! VH1 had previously done a feature on her experience, including interviews with Patricia and Lewis, which you can watch here.

So, we fibbed and told them that they were doing a re-release of the episode and wanted to do follow up interviews in Vegas. As far as Patricia and Lewis were concerned they were off to Vegas on a whim. They had no idea we’d flown almost their entire family in to surprise them!

The Reveal

Early in the morning, the family headed to the Peppermill Diner - a retro-style Vegas eatery, just off the strip.

Meanwhile, our crew were set to meet Julie, her parents Patricia and Lewis and her older brother Jason, in the lobby of Park MGM, under the guise that they were headed to a breakfast interview with VH1.

Little did Patricia and Lewis know, we had all their kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids, as well as Patricia's sister Judith, niece Kristy, great-niece Elizabeth and great-nephew Eric, standing by to surprise them.

As Patricia and Lewis got out of the car and came around the corner, they were stopped in their tracks at the sight of their family photo on a mobile billboard that read, 'Kryk Family Reunion. Only on Swoop'.

In a moment, confusion turned to surprise as 19 family members emerged from behind a hedge to welcome Patricia and Lewis to their official Kryk Family Vacation! Cue tears of joy, squeals of delight and of course plenty of hugs and laughter.

From there it was off to enjoy an action-packed itinerary of activities, including breaking bread at the renowned Bacchanal Buffet at Caesar's Palace, a backstage experience at Cirque du Soleil's Mystere at Treasure Island, and a ride on the High Roller Observation wheel, lit up pink in honour of the occasion. And that was just day one…

Day two started with rides and games at the Adventuredome at Circus Circus, and a tour of the Las Vegas strip, courtesy of Pink Jeep Adventure with stops at the iconic Las Vegas sign and A Little White Wedding Chapel. Patricia & Lewis even got to renew their wedding vows in front of all their kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. There was not a dry eye in the house!

The day wound down with a quick stop at Fremont Street to check out vintage Vegas before the sun set. And with that it was a wrap, giving the family a third day to themselves.
